The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center seeks a curator in the Taylor Museum with expertise in Hispanic and Native American Art, with knowledge of, and the ability to connect, contemporary objects, to historical matter. With 10,000 – 11,000 objects in its collection, the Taylor Museum holds one of the strongest Hispanic and Native American collections in the United States. Some examples include historically and stylistically diverse Santos, Mexican Folk Art, and Guatemalan textiles. The Native American collection comprises southwestern Native American artifacts and jewelry, including Navajo weavings and Pueblo pottery. Currently, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center is embarking upon a multi-million dollar building initiative to expand the facility. In addition to the Taylor Museum, the Fine Arts Center includes the Bemis School of Art and the SaGaJi theatre. When new construction is complete in 2007, the new building will expand from 88,388 to 132,286 gross square feet; a total expansion of 48,398 gross square feet. The Fine Arts Center is a rapidly growing Center. In the last three years the museum has augmented its membership from a little over 3,000 members to nearly 10,000 today. In addition, the Taylor Museum has one of the largest collections of Dale Chihuly glass in North America.

Requirements:
• Proposes exhibitions that will present a thought-provoking schedule that includes a balance of material in different media, styles, regions, and art historical periods. In addition, the qualified candidate must possess the ability to demonstrate innovative approaches in exhibiting the works of Dale Chihuly as it relates to the southwestern collection. • Originate and implement dynamic and groundbreaking exhibitions with the capacity to travel. • Working with a small curatorial staff, provides leadership on a conceptual and operational level, including, but not limited to, exhibition design and installation. • Coordinates loans, installations, and educational efforts on all Hispanic and Native American exhibitions. • Collection development, collection management, original research, interpretation, outreach, and maintaining fiscal responsibility and accountability for the department. • Researches works in the collection to update catalog records. • Negotiates, contracts, and schedules traveling exhibitions. • Writes label material and publication text for exhibitions. • Trains docents on permanent collection and special exhibitions. • Discusses exhibition proposals with inter-departmental staff members and Museum Committee. • Works with Public Relations and Marketing to develop materials to publicize art exhibitions. • Works with Education Department to develop museum education programs. • Works with Resource Development Department to develop grant proposals for museum programs. • Conducts public lectures in area of expertise and on the Taylor Museum activities. • Commitment to the mission of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.

M.A. in art history required, with a specialization in Hispanic and Native American Art; A.B.D. or Ph.D. preferred. • Proven record of publications (e.g.), exhibition catalogues, articles in scholarly magazines. • Significant acquisitions experience. • Sensitive to sound conservation practices relevant to the permanent collection of Hispanic and Native American Art. • Knowledge of the rules, guidelines and regulations in carrying out NAGPRA. • Prior museum experience at the curatorial level preferred. • Excellent writing skills that can relate information to both the general public and academic audiences. • Ability to work with a small staff where art programs are coordinated between departments.

(2) Curator/Archivist I-Collection Manager Ethnology in Norman, Oklahoma

The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History seeks an experienced and energetic professional to serve as the Collection Manager in Ethnology. This permanent staff position will report to the Curator of Ethnology and be responsible for the daily operations and management of the museum’s ethnology, classical archaeology, and Native American and natural history fine art collections. Requirements:
Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, folklore, museum studies, art history, conservation, or related field OR an equivalent combination of education/job related experience. 24 months of experience in systematic collections or other museum related work. Demonstrated knowledge of acceptable museum practices and standards for collection care, collection management, documentation, conservation, and registration methods. Requirements may be met by equivalent combination of education and related experience. Prior supervisory and photographic/multi-media experience preferred.

(3) Curator of African, Oceanic & Native American Art in Minneapolis, Minnesota

The MIA seeks an experienced curator of African art to oversee the department’s collection; interpret the department’s collection through exhibitions, publications and special programs; develop and oversee the installation of the collection as well as special loan exhibitions; cultivate prospective donors and build the department’s permanent collection through purchases and gifts; manage the curatorial department. This position reports to the Director & President and supervises an Associate Curator, Assistant Curator and Administrative Assistant.

Requirements:
Requirements include: minimum of M.A., Ph.D. preferred; African art specialist with minimum of 7 years curatorial experience in field of African art, with broad knowledge of Native American and Oceanic art; strong record of research and scholarship, with proven experience organizing exhibitions and producing publications of high quality; demonstrated skill at strategically building a collection through gift and purchase; team player with proven ability to work effectively and positively with staff, trustees, and all other internal and external contacts; ability to build positive and effective relationships with donors and the broader community; proven experience supervising staff, with strong department management skills.
