Postdoc Teaching Fellow Sociocultural Anthropology

The Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia invites applications for up to 17 Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowships to begin July 1, 2008. Two of these positions have been allocated to the Department of Anthropology—one in anthropological archaeology and one in sociocultural anthropology. The Postdoctoral Teaching Fellows will join 14 currently in the Faculty. These positions enable innovative and collaborative teaching between Postdoctoral Teaching Fellows and outstanding UBC professors, while helping to launch the careers of new scholars showing early promise as excellent university teachers and researchers. Each Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow will have opportunities to interact with faculty on teaching and research, as well as be part of a cohort of early-career scholars sharing methods and exchanging ideas for excellent teaching. The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a one year post-doctoral teaching fellowship in sociocultural anthropology, commencing July 1, 2008, with the possibility of renewal for a second year subject to approval from the Head of the department. Applicants will normally be within 3 years of having been awarded the PhD. We seek candidates with an enthusiasm for teaching undergraduate students, whose research backgrounds and pedagogic skills complement and enhance the Department’s emphasis on global perspectives and collaborative field research. Topical and geographic fields are open, but we especially welcome applicants with interests in museum anthropology or globalization, and ethnographic research experience in South Asia or Africa. The successful candidate will teach three single-semester undergraduate courses or sections each year of the fellowship, under the supervision of an experienced professor. Courses to be taught include “Introduction to Cultural Anthropology” and a senior undergraduate seminar in their area of expertise. All positions are subject to final budgetary approval. Applicants should submit a letter of application, a statement of teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching potential, a sample of written work, and a CV.
