Opening: Director

Phillips Academy, Andover seeks a full-time Director of the R. S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology upon retirement of respected incumbent.

The Peabody Museum holds major Native-American archaeological collections (500,000 artifacts, 25,000 photographs), including materials from the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, Mexico, the Arctic, covering 10,000 years. It is primarily a teaching museum and educational resource for the Academy and scholarly community (www.andover.edu/Museums/MuseumOfArchaeology).

The Director and staff (4 museum professionals plus admin. asst.) collaborate with Academy faculty to integrate Museum resources, research, scholarship, and cross-cultural approach into the curriculum, producing interdisciplinary lessons and courses, organizing lectures and events, and leading expeditionary learning programs.

Drawing on the resources of the Academy and a national Advisory Committee, the Director oversees all facets of the Museum, from articulating the vision to managing the staff, budget, facility and collections, to building and maintaining relationships with scholars, alumni, donors and Native communities.

M.A. or Ph.D. (preferred) in Archaeology, Anthropology, Native Cultures, or related field. 5+ years of administrative experience in a museum with significant collections, preferably a college or university teaching museum, or equivalent management experience. Experience supervising professional staff. Archaeological and teaching experience; sensitivity to Native issues; NAGPRA experience; strong communication skills, collaborative style.
