Opening: Museum of Indian Arts and Culture Executive Director


The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology (MIAC), a prestigious institution dedicated to increasing the appreciation and knowledge of the diverse Native arts, histories, languages, and cultures of the Greater Southwest, is seeking an exceptional individual to fill the position of Director. MIAC, a division of the State of New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, serves as a national focal point for the study, advancement, presentation and preservation of 12,000+ years of Native American cultural heritage. Position Summary: The Director is an appointee of the Governor of New Mexico and Cabinet Secretary of Cultural Affairs. The position reports to the Cultural Affairs Secretary, the Governor of New Mexico, and the Museum of New Mexico Board of Regents. The position requires a seasoned administrator with a track record of successful leadership of a multidisciplinary museum organization, oversight of a professional staff, and collaboration with a Native American Advisory Panel. The Director supervises a dedicated staff of curators, educators, anthropologists, and archaeologists who are responsible for the preservation and interpretation of Native American ethnographic, contemporary, and archaeological objects and works of art representing the diverse Native peoples of the American Southwest and northern Mexico. The Director supervises a staff of 25 and oversees a complex institution including the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, the library and archives of the Laboratory of Anthropology, the Center for New Mexico Archaeology (the state’s archaeological repository), and the Museum Hill Cafe. Desired Qualifications:
1. An advanced education degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline related to the function of the division, including but not limited to anthropology, archaeology, art history, American Indian studies, or museum studies
2. Significant experience in the management and operation of an organization similar to the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, including exhibitions and public programs
3. Passion for and in-depth knowledge of Southwest Indian arts, cultures, communities, and constituencies
4. Experience in fund development and grants management
5. Experience developing exhibitions and programming in a cultural institution
6. Scholarly accomplishment

2. Budgetary oversight and administration
3. Policy development and implementation in an institutional setting
4. Strategic planning and implementation
5. Community outreach and engagement with both Native, non-Native, and support communities
6. Exceptional interpersonal and public relations

10. Experience working with boards and foundations
