The White Mountain Apache Tribe will get $84,468 in Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) funds for the repatriation of remains and sacred objects, the National Park Service (NPS) announced on September 11.
The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and the Gettysburg Foundation will get $385 and $5,147, respectively, for a total of $90,000 in grants.
“The work funded by these grants is a step toward addressing past violations of the treatment of human remains and sacred objects of native peoples, while restoring the ability of American Indian and Native Hawaiian peoples to be stewards of their own ancestral dead and cultural heritage,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis in a statement.
NAGPRA dates back to 1990 and mandates that museums and federal agencies take inventory of, and identify, American Indian remains and cultural items in their collections, the NPS explained. They must also consult with associated tribes, Alaska Native villages and Native Hawaiian organizations about repatriation.
In July NAGPRA gave out copy.5 million for such repatriation.
