Position Announcement: Assistant Registrar, The San Diego Museum of Art

The San Diego Museum of Art is looking for an Assistant Registrar to join its dedicated Registrarial team. The Assistant Registrar reports to the Senior Registrar and assists with the care, movement and documentation of works of art, including processing acquisitions and loans from the collection as well as assisting with travelling exhibitions. The Assistant Registrar works within a small team toward the care and documentation of artworks in the Museum’s collection and works of art on loan for exhibitions. He/she supports the Senior Registrar as well as the Associate Registrars. The Assistant Registrar must be flexible to work out of hours and must be willing and available to travel nationally and internationally as needed.

Core Responsibilities:

-Collections
-Assists in all aspects of collections care, following accepted museum practices and American Alliance of Museums (AAM) standards
-Assists with all aspects of outgoing loan coordination
-Catalogues incoming loans for gift/purchase/bequest consideration
-Updates acquisition information in physical and electronic departmental records
-Numbers newly accessioned objects
-Facilitates storage of artworks, and undertakes storage maintenance and reorganization
-Assists with inventory checks and helps maintain location records
-Assists curators, visiting scholars, researchers and photographers access the collection
-Assists with preparation of permanent collection displays
-Examines artworks of all media and origin and completes condition reports
-Assists in identifying potential risks to the collection and acts to reduce or eliminate them
-Assists with preparation of artworks including organizing photography, conservation, matting and framing
-Performs in-house cleaning of permanent collection objects including outdoor sculpture in accordance with current conservation procedures
-Maintains and orders supplies
-Participates in occasional professional conferences and workshops in order to keep abreast of current museum practices
-Attends meetings and performs other necessary and related tasks, as required

Exhibitions
-Couriers works of art when required and supervises their unpacking and installation in other venues; acts as an ambassador for the museum when travelling
-Assists with packing, shipping, storage and insurance arrangements as well as any other logistics related to the movement of artwork
-Updates master checklist
-Assembles condition and packing report notebooks
-Makes travel, hotel and per diem arrangements for couriers
-Documents the packing and unpacking of artwork
-Receives/releases shipments 
-Database Support
-Assists with clean-up of data
-Assists with editing photography of the permanent collection
-Links primary photos to database
-Enters exhibition and object information into collections database
-Updates movement of collection objects in database

Requirements
Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s degree in art history or museum studies
-Two years museum experience
-Working knowledge of current best practices in museum collection management
-Effective time management skills and the ability to multitask
-Highly organized and have an excellent attention to detail
-Demonstrated competency with MS Office Suite; familiarity with museum databases and digitization software, and a willingness to learn new technology
-Good communication skills, both written and oral
-Work effectively both independently and as part of a team
-Ability to use small tools and work on ladders
-Ability to work independently and as part of a team while meeting strict deadlines
-A valid US passport
Physical Demands/ Work Environment
-Some traveling (Nationally and Internationally)
-50% time spent on the computer
-Office space is shared.
