Position Announcement: 2017 Native American Long-Term Fellow, Peabody Essex Museum

The Peabody Essex Museum is pleased to announce a post-graduate curatorial fellowship for 2017-2018, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Beginning in mid-September 2017, this twelve month fellowship will provide curatorial training and support scholarly research related to the collections and exhibitions of the Peabody Essex Museum. The Native American Fellow is fully integrated into the Exhibition Research and Publishing (ERP) team of PEM's Curatorial department with duties comparable to those of assistant curator. This position supports collection curators on exhibition planning, implementation, and other curatorial projects. ERP team members manage a portfolio of specific curatorial projects that require them to: develop exhibition proposals; research and implement exhibitions, publications, and interpretive materials; and research and/or facilitate collection-related projects. The position interfaces across many PEM departments, especially with Collection Services, Registration, Exhibition Planning, Interpretation, and Conservation, regarding the implementation of projects.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Support and collaborate with the curators of American Art and Native American and Oceanic Art and Culture in support of future gallery installations. Fellow will provide support on exhibition development, including proposals, research, checklist development and management, planning, and interaction with outside researchers, exhibition advisors, artists, collectors, museum patrons, and curatorial staff from other institutions. Participate in the development of exhibition publishing projects; collaborate with editor and curator to provide content research, and production support as needed.

2. Participate in exhibition planning teams, facilitate communication and monitor progress to meet exhibition planning goals and deadlines for assigned projects. Take part in the development of interpretive strategies, labels, and integrated media as needed.

3. Support Director of Exhibition Planning, curators, and other staff in management of traveling exhibitions organized by the Peabody Essex Museum and tours to other venues. Coordinate with PEM staff and borrowing institutions to facilitate reviews and approvals and other tasks as needed.

4. Support curators in other areas such as collection development, acquisition research, institutional advancement, and responding to research inquiries. This may include planning and implementation of Visiting Committee Meetings, patron programs, public programs and symposia, and special projects as needed.

5. Assists Collection Services with access to and use of collection, researcher appointments and correspondence, collection photography; and participate in collection handling, and exhibition installation as needed.

6. Assists Registration with exhibition loan activities, including conditioning, serving as courier, and other tasks as needed.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for candidates who are of Native American, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian descent. First Nations descendants are also welcome to apply, provided you are eligible to work in the United States. MA required; PhD or ABD preferred. Art History degree preferred. Minimum of 3 years of related experience preferably in an art museum setting and experience related to preparing exhibitions and publications. Must be resourceful, able to work independently and adjust easily to changing priorities. Excellent strategic thinking, written and oral communication, time and project management and multi-tasking skills required; creativity and initiative in identifying and fulfilling curatorial requirements essential; highly organized and detail oriented a must; strong interpersonal skills and a team-oriented work style critical. Strong research skills as well as familiarity with computerized word processing, spreadsheets and databases required.
